See How Covert GPS Tracking Improves Loss Prevention
Nippon Express is a global logistics provider. Their goals are to swiftly and flexibly respond to customer needs, be prepared to deal with crisis and be both environmentally and socially responsible.
Nippon approached GPSit to help address the following specific business objectives:
- Obtain greater visibility into independent subcarrier shipments
- Prevent delayed shipments due to delivery route problems
- Ensure performance of independent drivers
- Optimize shipment handling
- Provide early notice of inbound shipments to clients and distribution hubs
- Provide real time shipment information to clients, including arrival time validation
- Safeguard against shrinkage, theft and hijacking concerns
Since much of Nippon’s ground shipments are handled by independent carriers, a portable, battery operated GPS tracking solution was needed. For single stop shipments, the tracker was to be affixed to a pallet within the shipment, and for multi-stop routes, attached to shipment documentation. In both cases, the tracker needed to be easily retrieved and quickly re-commissioned for the next shipment.
Nippon selected GPSit’s cloud based TrackFusion application for management of the portable trackers. Core features such as Geofence alerting and notification capabilities were utilized to automate routine monitoring functions.
As a key part of the solution, battery operated PT300 trackers from Sendum were selected due to:
- Small physical size enabling covert deployments
- Superior coverage on Verizon network
- Ability to monitor in-transit conditions (vibration, shock, temperature, humidity, etc.)
- Ability to obtain GPS fixes while covertly located inside of shipment contents in enclosed trailers
The robust combination of GPSit’s TrackFusion, Sendum Wireless PT300 trackers and startup professional services from GPSit helped ensure a successful solution deployment.
A large home builder in San Diego, approached GPSit with a theft problem it was experiencing at its construction sites. In the company’s model homes, brand new appliances were being stolen during the night hours. With the help of GPSit, Sendum GPS Trackers were attached to the bottoms of the refrigerators as they were placed in the model homes. GPSit’s Trackfusion software set Geofences around the device to ensure their whereabouts at all times.
GPSit was able to help the customer accurately track the whereabouts of company assets by deploying a very powerful and covert tracking solution. The experience led the company to buy more GPS Trackers to deploy on generators and tractor equipment to know their locations at all times.
After several days of deployment, the construction site superintendent received a text message in the middle of the night. He was able to log into his Trackfusion account and see where the device was reporting from which was not in the construction zone. The superintendent went to the model home and noticed several big ticket items were missing. He contacted the police and reported the incident and the current location of the device. When the officers arrived at the scene to take a report, he told them he had equipped the refrigerator with a GPS tracking device and showed them on the computer the current location of the device. Officers were dispatched to the location that the device was reporting. Upon arrival, they saw a refrigerator sitting in the back of a pickup truck. They called the superintendent to the scene and he showed them where the GPS Tracker was hidden. The police ran the license plate of the truck and discovered the truck was parked at the residence listed in DMV records. Police approached the house and knocked on the door and asked for the registered owner of the truck. When they got him outside they asked if that was his truck and his refrigerator. He said that it was. He was then arrested for grand theft a felony charge.
GPSit was able to help this customer save almost $1 million in cigarette loss by deploying state of the art tracking devices and award winning software.
A major tobacco company approached GPSit with a problem of internal cigarette theft at its manufacturing plant. They were routinely experiencing $100,000 per month in loss and could not identify the source of the loss.
After analyzing the situation, GPSit recommended Sendum GPS Trackers and the powerful TrackFusion Software.
By using a proven technology and an experienced loss prevention team, GPSit was able to assist in the apprehension of a recurring cigarette theft ring which ultimately led to the firing and prosecution of five employees who were conspiring to steal and sell the cigarettes on the black market.
GPSit deployed three GPS Trackers into three cartons of cigarettes. The cartons were placed at different locations in the manufacturing facility. These areas were designated inventory holding areas where there was no security cameras. Geofences were deployed on the devices and the security team stood by on full alert for any sign of movement of the devices. Two days later during the third shift from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., a geofence alert was activated. It was discovered the box housing the device which activated the geofence was indeed missing from the plant floor. The security team jumped into action and began to actively track the device in real time as the device headed for the interstate highway. Agents began pursuit and notified the local sheriff of the situation. Security began to check employee timecard logs and found an employee who had just left the plant with the permission of his supervisor for being sick. The security team now had a possible lead and headed to the employee’s home address. While in direct communication with the local sheriffs office, the security team directed the sheriff to the location of the device and provided information regarding the suspects vehicle and license plate number. Upon identifying the vehicle, the sheriffs department pulled the car over and was given approval to search the car by the employee. The security team arrived at the location where they found the suspect being questioned by authorities and three cases of unopened cigarettes on the roof of the car.
For under $1,000 this company was able to secure its goods in transit while saving a significant amount of money by cutting down on the thefts and the amount of man hours required to investigate each incident.
A national retail chain approached GPSit regarding a string of thefts of men’s and women’s clothing apparel as it was in transit from their manufacturing plant to distribution centers.
Through the covert use of GPSit GPS Trackers and TrackFusion software, GPSit was able to help this customer be able to watch the progress of its goods in transit.
GPSit was able to accurately display the location of the goods in transit by using a covert wireless GPS Tracker and TrackFusion tracking application. The retail chain used this tracking technique to routinely monitor the assets of the company as their product moved through the supply chain. The occurrence of these thefts dramatically decreased.
On the first load tracked, the truck made an irregular stop along its route. It was stopped for 15 minutes. After its delivery to the distribution center, the load was inventoried and it was concluded items were missing from the manifest.
The second load with the same driver was tracked and followed by undercover company loss prevention agents as another crew of LP agents staked out the apartment complex where the truck had previously stopped. As the truck again diverted off route, it made a stop at the same location it had before. The LP agents were able to take pictures of items being taken off of the truck and into an apartment.
